About UPS & Our Culture
Every package that enters the UPS network carries with it a set of promises — correct labeling, compliant packaging, accurate declared contents, and proper hazmat classification where applicable. Our Package Auditors are the associates who verify those promises before a parcel is released into the outbound transportation stream. This is precision work — demanding, detail-oriented, and consequential in a way that most sort floor roles never approach. If you are searching for package auditor jobs near me with a stationary, analytical work environment, a Teamsters union wage that does not reflect the reduced physical demands of the role, and a career pathway into compliance and quality management, UPS's Package Audit function is one of the most professionally credentialing positions available to an hourly fulfillment associate.
What Our Team Says (Employee Reviews)
"Package auditing requires you to know the rules and apply them without hesitation. When I find a package with a missing UN number, an incorrect hazard label, or a shipper's declaration that does not match the contents I can physically see through the damaged packaging — I pull it, document it, and escalate it. My decisions protect UPS from regulatory liability and protect the public from improper hazmat handling. The Teamsters wage for a package auditor at UPS is identical to physical sort work — same pay, far less physical strain, and far more intellectual engagement." - Current Package Auditor, Richmond, VA.
Role Overview & Responsibilities
As a UPS Package Auditor, you examine inbound and outbound packages at assigned audit stations inside our fulfillment center — verifying label accuracy, packaging integrity, hazmat compliance, and declared content consistency against UPS acceptance criteria and 49 CFR regulatory requirements before authorizing each package for release into the outbound sort flow.
- Label & Address Accuracy Audit: Inspect shipping labels on flagged packages for OCR scan failures, address format errors, missing postal codes, and barcode print quality failures — correcting resolvable label errors using the audit workstation's label reprint system and quarantining unresolvable packages for shipper contact before outbound release.
- Packaging Integrity Evaluation: Physically assess flagged packages for outer box crush, seal failure, moisture damage, or contents breach — applying the UPS Package Acceptance Criteria published in the UPS Packaging Guide to determine whether the package can travel safely or requires repackaging before it enters the outbound transportation stream.
- Hazmat Compliance Spot Check: Conduct random compliance spot checks on packages identified by the induction scan system as potential hazmat candidates — verifying proper name, packing group, quantity limits, and label placement against 49 CFR Subpart E requirements, escalating any non-compliant item to the certified Hazmat Handler for regulated processing.
Benefits & Perks
UPS Package Auditors receive Teamsters union wages, a stationary workstation environment, full Teamsters medical, dental, and vision benefits, pension accrual, paid personal days, and UPS Earn & Learn tuition assistance. The regulatory knowledge built in this role — 49 CFR, IATA DG, and UPS packaging compliance standards — is directly transferable to customs brokerage, freight compliance, and supply chain quality management career tracks across the logistics industry.
